Off to Dawson Creek

How cool is this! We happened to be in Chetwynd when there was an International Chainsaw Carving Event going on! there were carvers from as far away as Japan, South Wales!

They were not cheap either! Ranges from $3000-$20,000! I found this one particularly beautiful and wanted to bring it home but my pocket book couldn't afford it on my measly pension!

You would think that this far north that the landscape would be trees and brush. Not so. Upon entering Dawson Creek the terrain is high and flat. The plateau is pasture land with horse and cattle. Town is settled into a large valley. The wind blows through this valley, hard enough to blow our eyebrows off!

Milepost "0" is located in the center of town and creates a roundabout for all traffic. We actually stopped here because we saw a place for a brew and burger, but the saloon did not serve food. A nice motor biker kindly took our picture in returned favor of taking his! Rosie, Bean and Tilly were happy to be along with us for this memorable event!

Yippee! We found a place for a bite and brew! Pretty good food and great service! The establishment gave us each a leather bound notepad after we had been chatting of our journey.

There is close to nothing to do in Dawson Creek. Our recommendations for future travelers is to spend a couple of hours visiting the milepost and the visitor center, where they have a wealth of brocheres and information for northbound travelers. Hey, since there is nothing to do, lets travel a potion of the "old" Alaska Highway! This interesting side road gives travelers the opportunity to drive the original old wooden Kiskatinaw River Bridge. It is the only original timber bridge built along the Alaskan Highway that is still in use today. May I add.....quite scary to cross!

Thanks so much for taking the time to blog, girls -- it's greatly appreciated to those of us living vicariously through your adventures. Be safe! We believe you about the bears, so don't try to get too close. Big hugs. Sally
